I can determine the effect of Genetic Drift on populations

LTLT:  I can develop, communicate, and justify an evidence-based explanation for the evolution of organisms and environments by analyzing and interpreting data from the fossil record.
LT: I can determine the effect of Genetic Drift on populations.

Criteria for Success:
*I can complete a lab with a new species: Frootloopitus cerealis
* I can count fruit loops into new populations

Agenda:
Warm UP
LT & C.S.
Genetic Drift is….

  Warm UP:
What’s the difference between genes and jeans??

Review LTLT, LT & C.S.

Genetic Drift is….
*A change in DNA in a population, due to a random event. This has to do with luck, not fitness.

Founder Effect Event…
*Occurs when a new colony is started by a few members of the original population

Bottleneck Event….
*When a population’s size is reduced for at least one generation.

Fruit Loop Lab:
Scientists have just discovered a NEW species, called: frootloopitus cerealis

You are going to do a lab where you explore the idea of Genetic Drift with populations of this new species.

Lab Questions

Debrief/Exit Ticket
Q1: Based on the fruit loop lab, what is Genetic Drift?

Q2: What does Genetic Drift have to do with populations?
