LTLT:  I can identify and analyze data to describe how major geologic events have changed organisms over time.
LT: I can evaluate how major geologic events have caused mass extinctions of animals and plants.

Criteria for Success:
-I can identify major geological events during each extinction
-I can categorize events by extinctions.

Agenda:
1.     Warm up
2.     Table Talk
3.     BBK
4.     Article Analysis (sage & scribe)
5.     Debrief
6.     Exit Ticket

2. Table Talk:
Based on your warm up, and with your tables, define extinction…

Include your reason WHY, what is your EVIDENCE????

(Do on the piece of paper, to be handed in)

Q: Discussion Question:
What could have caused ancient animal extinctions?

-Make a list on the board

(envir. disasters, catastrophic events, climate changes, meteors hitting Earth)

3. BBK
Q: How many mass extinctions do you think the Earth has had??
*glue sheet into journal

4. Article Analysis
You have 5 articles, you have 5 extinction events. For each event describe the MAJOR Causes of each, and what HAPPENED during each.

5.Debrief
Review each time period briefly,
1.     What was the extinction
2.     What happened during it
3.     What may have caused it?

*DISCUSS OUTLOUD

Exit Ticket (will be graded. use your notes!)
There have been major extinction events throughout Earth’s history.

1.Name the major extinction events discussed in the readings today.
2.Describe the cause of the event, and how it changed life on Earth.
3.How do you think this events relates to our Earth today or the fossils we will find in McCoy

BBL-EXTINCTIONS: Glue this sheet into your science journal

THE BIG FIVE!!!

1.   Ordovician-Silurian Extinction (439 MYA)

2.   Late Devonian Extinction (362 MYA)

3.   Permian-Triassic Extinction (251 MYA) aka; PT Extinction

4.   End Triassic Extinction (199 MYA-214 MYA)

5.   Cretaceous-Tertiary Extinction (65 MYA) aka: KT Extinction
