LT: I can describe the ways in which organism interact with each other

Name: __________________________ Date: __________________ Class Period: _______________

Step 1: Classify each of the following scenarios as Mutualism, Commensalism, or Parasitism.
Step 2: Explain your reasoning.

1.     Barnacles create home sites by attaching themselves to whales, and the whale is not hurt by this.

2.     Ticks feed on deer blood, which harms the deer.

3.     The stork uses its saw-like bill to cut up the dead animals it eats. As a result, the dead animal carcass is accessible to bees and other insects for food and egg laying.

4.     Ostriches and gazelles feed next to each other. They both watch for predators and alert each other to danger. Each animal has different vision abilities, and they can each identify threats that the other animal might not see.

5.     Yucca flowers are pollinated by yucca moths. The moths lay their eggs in the flower where the larvae hatch, and eat some of the developing seeds. Both species benefit.

6.     Hermit crabs live in shells made and then abandoned by snails.

7.     Oxpeckers feed on ticks found on rhinos.

8.     Wrasse fish feed on the parasites found on the black sea bass body.

9.     Mistletoe extracts water and other nutrients from the spruce tree, which harms the spruce tree.

10.  A flea feeds on a mouse’s blood, which harms the mouse.

11.  Honey guide birds alert and direct badgers to bee hives. The badgers then expose the hives and feed on the honey first. Then they hone guide birds eat. Both species benefits.
