Physical Properties Thinking Lab
Q: If I gave you a mixture containing…. How would you separate it?

HINT: This is your “cheat” sheet for your final lab…

**Point out LT on POL…”Designing a scientific investigation”

What are physical properties?
**Use your notes

Separation Processes Thinking Lab

*** You will need the information from this thinking lab for your
FINAL PROJECT***
**** Do not lose this paper****

In this lab, you will be finding the physical properties of multiple substances. As you are
exploring properties of each substance, keep this in the back of your mind: “what kind of
information would help me separate this substance from others if it were in a mixture.”

We have explored many ways to separate mixtures in this unit:

1.     Chromatography
2.     Density
3.     Distillation & Condensation
4.     Magnetism
5.     Filtration.
6.     Solubility

Part 1: Physical Properties:
Pretend you had a mixture composed of: Wood shavings, water, rubbing alcohol, sand,
oil, salt, iron fillings , and colored dye

For each piece of the mixture describe the physical properties. Use your notes.

*Wood Shavings:

*Water:

*Rubbing Alcohol

*Sand

*Oil

*Salt

*Iron Filings

*Colored Dye

Part 2: Separation Processes:
1. For each of the above mixture ingredients, what separation method would you use to separate
it from the larger mixture?
2. Describe HOW you would use that separation method.

*Wood Shavings:

*Water:

*Rubbing Alcohol

*Sand

*Oil

*Salt (NaCl)

*Iron Filings

*Colored Dye

Part 3: Separation Materials

Think about what information, and materials would you need to use each method. List them
here:

*Chromatography:

*Density:

*Distillation & Condensation:

*Magnetism

*Filtration

*Solubility:
