Each student receives a coffee filter and is asked…”

Chromatography Lab

·       Materials: Water, beaker, pencils, tape, coffee filter, ruler, markers
·       Procedures: See sheet on your table.

Set-Up for Coffee Filter

Answer the following questions once you have completed the activity.

1. Draw a diagram of what happened to the marker on the coffee filter in this activity.



2. Describe in words what happens when the water goes up the coffee filter and mixes with the 
ink from the marker?

PROCEDURES
GROUP MEMBER #1

1)   Pick up a coffee filter and a ruler.

2)   Draw a square in the middle of the coffee filter that is 10cm by 12cm. USE PENCIL.

3)   Divide the square into 6 rectangles each 2cm by 10cm .

GROUP MEMBER #2

4)   Cut out each of the rectangles

5)   Draw a line (IN PENCIL) 3 cm from the bottom of the strip

6)   Take one of the markers and draw a line over your pencil line.

GROUP MEMBER #3

7)   Tape the other end of the strip to a pencil

8)   Take a beaker and put 1cm of water in the bottom of the beaker

9)   Place your coffee filter strip in the water so that the bottom of the strip is in the water.
Do not let the line of ink go below the water line and watch what happens.
